Captain America: The Winter Soldier
I've been pretty eager to see this movie, because of all the good buzz about it on my flist. Thanks y'all! My son and I went to see it yesterday during the day, because it is spring break. Overall, I liked it, tho I had a few qualms.
I'll get my biggest qualm out of the way first, and this is the problem with these Marvel Cinematic Universe films: if there is such a huge threat, why isn't everyone involved?
Wouldn't you think Natasha would be like: gosh, I need a friend, to whom could I possibly turn... gosh I don't know maybe CLINT??
I know Steve has issues with Tony, but doesn't seem like all this trouble with Insight and menacing AIs, maybe they should at least CALL STARK???
They at least mention Bruce in this movie... and I guess he's not your go to guy in a diplomatic crisis... but they also mention Stephen Strange, which, if he's out there, WHAT THE HECK IS HE DOING. You know, in the recent movie, you've got a sorceror tearing up New York City, maybe you call your OWN Master of the Mystic Arts? Or maybe he's on retreat in Nepal and isn't taking calls???
Second qualm, and it's really just my personal thing, but Jensen Ackles should've had this role. I'm not saying Chris Evans does a bad job at all, he seems like a great guy, but I just have this mental image of Jensen constantly overlayed on everything Cap says??? It's poison, but I can't shake it. Also, they need a different makeup artist for Chris Evans... his face looks artificial and I can't tell why. Maybe two much eyeliner??? Idk.
Okay, after that I have no more qualms.
I'm really glad there was so much buzz about there being two stingers at the end of the movie. If you don't know, what happens is Hydra has the twins -- being, Wanda and Pietro, aka Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, who are the offspring of Magneto. I was kind of a Scarlet Witch/Vision shipper back in the day -- androids falling in love is a bit of a thing for me! And if you weren't aware, Captain Jack Harkness gets his name from Wanda's witch tutor, Agnes Harkness.
And OMG I have never been so glad of spoilers in my life! BUCKY. All the Bucky feels, from the minute the scary ass Winter Soldier first appeared to the very end of the stinger. BUCKY!!!!! Also you all should know by now that I have a huge weakness for bad guys who feel their own pain. The Winter Soldier's scary badassery combined with his TERRIBLY SAD EYES and his Tangled Long Hair of Villain!Pain --right in the feels, plus HE IS BUCKY. /o\ D: D: D: My son was like "why are you crying?" :P
The action sequences in this movie were very actiony and gripping, which was good, because the whole movie is like Action for Ten Minutes, plot for two, Action for 10 minutes, plot for two, repeat. The rescue off the ship was really fun. I've never been a huge Cap fan, but it was very enjoyable to watch him fight.
Black Widow was perfect in this movie (except for not calling Clint; I guess he is in North Korea or trying to hold down Ukraine right now). I much loved her conversations with Steve. The two of them make fun partners, and I was really glad there was no UST whatsoever. Thank you, makers!!!!
The Falcon was ideal. I loved that he was a counselor for sufferers of PTSD. This whole movie has a strong message about what we do to soldiers and what we expect from them and how much they sacrifice and our culpability in that. It was overall a very strong movie politically I thought. Also? I live about twenty minutes from Fort Meade so that was freaking awesome. Oh I'll just pop down the Parkway and get those wings, be right back. People should know that the big NSA compound is right next to Fort Meade too.
I really liked how they utilized Robert Redford in this movie. As a huge liberal, he must have gotten a kick out of spouting all the fascist rhetoric. And it was so perfect listening to Captain America talk back to the military industrial complex that wants to install All the Drones, and the whole NSA is reading this post, etc. I really liked the Hydra guy in the magnetic reel computers. Yay!
So I was very happy with it. Also they had the evil staff that used Loki in the New York movie, so that was cool. I wish canon were a little more explicit there.... if anyone can point out whether Loki was definitely being controlled by Thanos to destroy New York? I'd be very grateful.
I really do not think Agents of Shield is very good. We watched the Sif vs Lorelei one last night, because ASGARDIANS, but I still didn't like it. But I feel like I have to watch the uprising stuff.
Two hour Shield event tonight? conflicts with new SPN?? Um..... that would be SPN natch.
A wonderful Passover to those who celebrate. For many years we have celebrated Passover at my church, but not this year, so my family had our own little Passover at home. I'm not Jewish (tho like Colbert, I am haplo group K!), but I respect the Jewish tradition very much. Many heartfelt prayers to those who were touched by the hate crimes in Overland Park, Kansas. ): After our seder we watched "Everyone Hates Hitler," one of my favorite Supernatural episodes. If Edlund had to leave SPN, at least he got to write Undead Nazi Necromancers before he went. Yay Golem! I hope the Men of Letters (aka Sam and Dean) cooperate with rabbis again sometime soon.
