The SF influence in this story goes all the way back to when I was 11 in 1979, reading The Ringworld Engineers serialized in Galileo Magazine. The main character Louis Wu is a "wirehead" -- addicted to direct stimulation of the pleasure centers of his brain -- but manages to fight off robbers who break in to his apartment. The story is different, but anyway, hero + future drugs + violence = my brain on SF. :)
I'm glad the Rose/Tardis thing works for you. I've had this head canon for a while now and was happy to have a story where it could come out. :D
