RE Harold Bloom, IDK, I try to just take him with a grain of salt... :)
Was your thesis about comics or Buffy?
I went surfing and found the Swampie cover I was thinking of. I can't decide if it's a real reference or just a common theme. Here is a nice page of Swamp covers, http://www.coverbrowser.com/covers/swamp-thing and it is No. 12 (Sept/Oct 1974) -- I was six years old at the time and LOVED horror comics. Another favorite of mine at that age was "Killdozer" which I eventually learned was a comic version of a Tv adaptation of a 1944 novella by Theodore Sturgeon! "That Bulldozer! It's alive! and it's trying to destroy us!" says a guy uselessly shooting a pistol at the bulldozer. And the bulldozer is saying (in blood red all caps) "YOU DARE DEFY ME AND SO YOU MUST DIE!" That was pretty much my standard response on the playground throughout childhood. :)
