O Death

He lost Dean in West Virginia. Felt his heart struggle behind the sweep of his ribs, watched light flee his eyes. Felt the tension of pain fade into the dullness of death, watched the last vestiges of life flicker through fingers curled against the red dirt.

Sam wept, as women bathed his brother's body on an old table. His grief couldn't drown out the croon of the oldest woman, her song to Dean.

It pained him, hearing the tremor of understanding, as she told the dead boy, this stranger, of the slow fingers of death when they had claimed him.
