SPN countdown: s1

I don't remember episodes very well just from their titles, but that is what superwiki is for.
Here are my reactions off the top of my head.  I hope you guys aren't shocked by my lack of love for some things!  s1 is not my favorite season, but there are still plenty of fantastic moments.

:)    •    1.01 Pilot -- of course my favorite part is when Sam says you can do it alone, but Dean says, I don't want to
o_o   •    1.02 Wendigo -- this was the only ep of s1 I saw when it aired, and I hated it!  Sam seemed like a whiner, and the two brothers seem so mismatched, and the whole thing seemed like a ripoff of the x Files.  I did not realize at that time that several SPN directors had actually worked for X Files, which prior to Supernatural was the show that seemingly spawned from inside my own head.  I did not pick up SPN when it aired.  Sorry, super slow yet supposedly fast Wendigo!!
:D   •    1.03 Dead in the Water.  Love this ep.  Love Andrea Barr.  Love Dean connecting with the little boy. Still think Sam is annoying.
:D    •    1.04 Phantom Traveler -- love scared Dean on the plane, love the pretexting and the Metallica.  Great ep.
o_o    •    1.05 Bloody Mary-- not so much.
:D    •    1.06 Skin -- Like it.  Like meeting Sam's friends and hearing the secret underbelly of Dean's resentments from the shifter.  Dean was never the "good soldier" like Sam thought.
o_o    •    1.07 Hook Man -- also not so much.
:)    •    1.08 Bugs -- I like parts of this very well, but not the denouement.
:D    •    1.09 Home -- very nice.  Still baffled why we never meet Missouri again??
:D    •    1.10 Asylum -- awesome.  Love rage ghosts.  Love Kat.  Feel very sorry for Dean when Sam shoots him, but I do understand Sam as well.
:D    •    1.11 Scarecrow -- like this one very well.  Like that Sam comes back to save Dean.
:D :D   •    1.12 Faith -- Yes of course.  Layla is one of those amazing characters that we remember forever, so much more than "woman of the week."   I love how we get the first glimpse of Sam being completely unable to accept anything less than saving Dean.  And reapers, and Dean in the hoodie of whumpage.  a rightful classic
:)    •    1.13 Route 666 -- I like Cassie!  I like that she is the kind of girl Dean would go for if he could.
o_o    •    1.14 Nightmare --  I have rewatched this very few times. But Sam has powers, which is pretty cool!
:D    •    1.15 The Benders -- I like this because of the lady cop, she is a great character and is one of those women Dean very much respects... cannibal hicks not my favorite trope, but creepily well executed.  And Dean saves Sammy from a cage, which is always a bonus.
:D    •    1.16 Shadow -- a great one.    This is when Dean breaks my heart begging to be a family again.  Oh Dean!!
:D   •    1.17 Hell House -- I think it's fun to point out that the Ghostfacers have been around since SEASON ONE.  They are not some kind of brainfart on the part of the writers, or anything like that. They were always part of the show from the beginning, as a balancing meta for the boys.  I love the tulpa and that whole concept.
:D   •    1.18 Something Wicked, oh man, this is a harsh one, with Dean being left alone to take care of Sammy and blaming himself about the striga, but it has to be considered a seminal ep in understanding what made Dean who he is today.  So let the big happy face at the beginning reflect that this ep is actually a big sad face, but I love it because it makes me care.
:D    •    1.19 Provenance.  Love it.  So sad that Sarah has now finally been killed off. Shipped Sarah and Sam for so long.
:)    •    1.20 Dead Man's Blood, yes, love the way vampires are portrayed on SPN.
o_o    •    1.21 Salvation & 1.22 Devil's Trap -- two of the big canonical eps that don't move me that much.  I'm sorry for John being possessed, idk why, but the first ep of s2 means a lot more to me personally.

I am loving seeing everyone's thoughts on season one. I liked Cassie the character a lot, though the actress who played her has never impressed me and she didn't here. I liked her in concept. :)

I loved Sarah too. Such a spunky woman. I loved Dean's "Sam, marry this girl." :) Also, the house with no salt.

Layla.....it is amazing that all these characters stick with us so well (of course, most of us have watched the episodes many times and not just nine years ago so they would stay fresh in our minds).

I LOVE Devil's Trap. Azazel in John is one of the creepiest things ever on this show. Such a brilliant performance by JDM. By all three of them in that scene in the cabin.

Someday I will rewatch Salvation and Devil's Trap. It's one of those things that I've been promising myself for many years. I have seen them more than once of course but they're just not my favorite. I think it's primarily because I am too Dean-centric. My favorite favorites are all about Dean. :D

I'm loving this trip down memory lane :)

Ha! I'm pretty sure 1x02 is one of my most watched episodes of SPN of all time; I have no idea why. It's just so... simple and classic. And bahaha, it's still as close to camping as they've ever really gotten. I'M STILL WAITING FOR MY CAMPING EPISODE, SPN. I WILL WAIT ALL DECADE IF I HAVE TO! :P

[identity profile] tifaching.livejournal.com 2014-09-29 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
And it's got Dean bloody and hanging from a hook. Then he's really badass and kills the wendigo with a flare gun. And Sam is so big all the other people can fit behind him in that scene where it tracks them down. Just a few things I love about it. And they camped. :)

YESSSSS. I love that scene where Sam get him down so much. JA plays it so well (as he always does); just so, so well. It doesn't count as camping if you don't sleep! :PP But It's as close as they've gotten to a legit backwoods episode, because at least they really were in the backwoods, and at some point the Collins' and Roy really did have gear. SO CLOSE. Let's do that again, Show! Again, again! :D

The saddest thing is that one of the victims of Crowley's revenge streak was one of the kids they saved in Wendigo. Their big sister is going kick Crowley's ass at some point. Eventually. Hayley Collins becomes a Hunter for sure. :)

Dean on a Hook!!!

the end of s3 was what thoroughly cemented me as a lifelong Spn fan... :D

The lasting effect of Wendigo on me is, pre Wendigo, I did not care for Peanut M&Ms. Post Wendigo, I consider them a major food group. Also, I see no reason not to go hiking in jeans and regular work boots. :)

Did you ever the see the XFile this is analagous to? It's a combination of Wendigo meets Bugs, and was called "Darkness Falls" -- different plot but very similar setting. :)

*** POINTING AT YOU AND MAKING THAT HORRID BODYSNATCHER NOISE***

and/or claiming YOU ARE NOT OF THE BODY!!!

At least get the first season of XFiles. It will knock you back how good it was. Also, one of the eps has baby Mark Sheppard!!!

Plus the darkness falls ep, is NOT about bees, but does involve swarming insects.... :)

Nice little summation of how each ep felt to you...which is what I was trying to do with my rewatch of 7 8, & 9 before the premiere but I guess succinct is just not within my capabilities...

Last year I did stories for each season, but it feels like fun this year to just go through and say what I remember. We will see when I get to later seasons how my memory will fail me. :P

yay super wiki!

this is really interesting! and giving me weird nostalgia feels. wendigo will always be the episode i couldn't watch the first time around because it was so freakin' dark. (as in dimly-lit, as in we had an old tv at the time and i couldn't see what was going on.) also it made me yell GRAND JUNCTION DOES NOT LOOK LIKE THAT at the tv. >.<

asylum was the first episode i ever saw, and i must have seen it as a rerun because i'd tried to watch scarecrow but the scarecrow itself scared the hell out of me and i changed the channel so fast. i liked scarecrow when i finally womaned up and saw it, tho. it felt very strongly x-files-ish to me.

the thing i really liked about the benders was that the monsters were human. not even possessed human, either. and the cop was just fantastic. and she didn't end up dead! or a potential love interest! how often does that happen?

almost nine years later and faith is still one of my very favoritest episodes. altho for a while phantom traveler was too, mostly for dean being so scared of flying. (why do you think he drives everywhere, sam??) also, metallica calms him down. :D

Your post has reminded me that so many of the best single episode characters probably come from this season and are women - Kathleen Hudak in the Benders, Layla in Faith, Missouri in Home... I was glad they revisited Sarah, but gutted they did it only to kill her off...

The way people are showing their love and thoughts throughout these countdowns is awesome, it's interesting to see the way everyone displays themselves differently :) ♥

This is a great idea to go through every episode like this! :D

I remember having the X-Files episode pretty fresh in my head when I saw Wendigo and the similarities were striking. I did think that the XF ep was scarier, but SPN has many redeeming qualities such as prettiness, hotness, and Sam'n'Dean. ;)

Faith is such a great episode. *happy sigh*

I love reading your thoughts on each of the eps.

I love Provenance, too. I'm so sad that Sarah is gone.
