Yes, Jared has become very subtle. He has really grown so much as an actor. He conveys so much by Sam's postures and face that you really need to watch Sam as a viewer and not just listen to his lines.
BlackCat on heavy_meta kind of points this out. When Dean says, "You didn't even look for me?" Sam doesn't answer Yes OR No. He just looks at Dean. That's the way Sam is. You have to look at his face to know his desperation and helplessness in the face of Dean's disappearance -- whereas Dean just wants Sam to say in so many words "I left no stone unturned" ---- my point is more, Sam wasn't going to be able to find a stone TO turn.
