I did not like the use they made of the idea of the Whore of Babylon. I mean, you read Revelation and it's really not perfectly clear what that figure stands for, but it seems to be more about pure ungodliness/wordliness. Not literally a WHORE, and not reductively a female. I just don't know. I didn't like it.
That said, I thought the story idea in all was fine -- that an Apocalyptic figure would try to warp and twist a town by promising it Paradise -- and of course, it was a perfect reflection of Dean's mental state -- he doesn't see at all that he's about to do the exact same thing that he just prevented the townspeople from doing.
As sad as that ep was, I still just can't bring myself to believe that Dean would say yes. How can the epic story of the Winchesters work if Dean says YES and is overwritten by Michael? Is this his crucifixion? I don't like it. But I decided not to watch the teaser for next week, so I am completely unspoiled.
My boy and I decided that Dean went to Lisa just to tell her that she and Ben shouldn't worry about the coming Apocalypse, because he'll make sure they are safe. I don't think Dean was necessarily declaring his true love, but I do think that Lisa is the lead contender of all the women we've seen Dean connect with... not just because of the kid, but because she knows about his life, and still asked him to stay. And it must mean something that Dean has sought her out twice now on his way to dying.... something more than just the sex he made his excuse.
It would have been pretty awful to be Lisa right then though, because Dean is obviously about to make a really bad choice, and he just won't listen.
The episode was really effective, because I was pretty convinced that he is about to say yes.... but I retain one tiny bit of hope, which is just that I don't think the story really works if Dean says yes... because then, he's no longer Dean.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
PS, Sam was awesome in this ep. Also Cas is a trip! but he is sadly on the road to 2014 -- just one more reason for Dean to give in now and say Yes the way 2014!Dean wanted him to. :(
