Everyone is offering their spn story, so I might as well join in!
I have a love/hate relationship with tv. I am incredibly picky about watching a show religiously week after week. that said, Supernatural is that show. :)
I was born in 1968, so I have a long history with tv. I grew up in a remote area where we only received one tv channel by broadcast, and it was ABC. On that channel, when i was a small girl, was Kolchak the Night Stalker. For some reason, my dad allowed me to watch it with him! It was my favorite show, along with Kung Fu and the Six Million Dollar Man. Kolchak + Kane + Steve Austin, Astronaut = apparently, a fangirl who is MADE for Supernatural.
I was a huge fan of the X-Files for a number of years -- see again my original formative love of Kolchak. I loved Mulder and Scully and Skinner and Krycek and the Lone Gunmen. My entree into slash was Mulder/Krycek. I was a hardcore lurker, but I loved it! I had always been a slashgirl before I even knew what it was. Discovering slash on the internet was HUGE. I was in grad school at the time, working through a phD in English lit, and it was a great life really! :)
I moved on from XFiles to other shows including Buffy, Xena, and Sentinel (only because of the slash!)... I also watched Voyager and DS9 but not Enterprise or any of the Stargate shows. I followed Angel without becoming a devotee, and I practically memorized Firefly when the DVD came out (all 14 eps). I was ready for a new fandom when....
I was googling Ben Edlund to see what he had gotten up to after working on Firefly, when lo and behold, he was writing for Supernatural!! No way. I had written spn off as a cheap ripoff of the XFiles starring improbably good looking brothers. Hmm. Okay, so I downloaded Simon Said and Nightshifter from iTunes. I was instantly hooked. I finally understood why all these folks on livejournal were writing about brothers! and why they had such foul mouths!!
I got my lj account because I was following ladyjanelly's stellar work in progress, the Homeless Jensen story. (She did eventually finish it to perfection of course!) I had to get an lj because i was tired of being Anonymouse. That was November 2007, and I had hastily acquired the first two seasons on DVD and was watching s3 as it aired. I remember the gutted feeling of the s3 season finale and pining all summer to the thought of Dean on meathooks!! I have an mfa in poetry, but I didn't write fiction -- I took up fic during s3 trying to figure out how Sammy could save Dean from the deal, how Sam could become the demon messiah or the boy king... and then I spent all summer trying to get Dean back from Hell. I was 100% absorbed into the fate of the Winchesters.
I have always been a sucker for serial fiction -- but it had never hit me this hard since the old days of Alan Moore's Swamp Thing -- which of course, is another of the big influences on Show, along with Kolchak and the XFiles. It's like everything that went in to making the show was tailor made for my preferences -- including the classic rock ( I own every Kansas album on LP ) and the classic car (the Impala is the big sister to my childhood car, the 1969 indy pace car Camaro, the toy version of which used to be my default icon).
Season Four completely blew me away. On the one hand you had Dean, trying to be himself again after becoming a demon in Hell, and on the other hand you had Sam, who turned to demon blood in an attempt to either get Dean back or at least destroy Lilith, and now was hooked on it... and who was convinced that his big brother still needed saving. Their story, and the machinations of the Angels, and Alastair, were riveting to me. S4 remains the most amazing season of tv I've ever followed.
It was also during the fall of s4 that I went to wincon with my plastic boys and met so many awesome fangirls! what a great weekend that was. I made a redbull tinhat! I traded a jerk/bitch tshirt for a christo ballcap that my family is so sick of now!
With the s4 finale at least leaving the brothers to face Lucifer together, I took on a challenge to write fic about every female character to appear on supernatural, for the 42 days of Metallicar. That was really fun and rewarding. In 42 days I made it through the first two seasons!
I'm so proud of show for reaching 100 episodes. My husband and I usually find that when we like a show it is the kiss of death. :) Somehow, tho, the many strengths of supernatural combine to form a show that can't be stopped. I am really excited for one more season. I hope that after the apocalypse, sam and dean will find a way to be happy -- maybe, really happy, or at least contented, for the first time in their lives, and that saving people, hunting things, will be its own reward for them, instead of a herculean and impossible task.
THANKS to all the great fangirls on livejournal that have squeed and argued and made such wonderful insights! and all their wonderful works of art that have left me laughing and crying.
and THANKS to Kripke, Kim, Phil, Serge, Sera, Ben, all the writers and hardworking staff, and of course to Jensen and Jensen and all the amazing actors that have given so much to make such a great show. The effort really pays off. Even when something goes too far, or falls flat, or is just plain dumb, those are tiny drops in the bucket toward what is absolutely my favorite show ever.
I just intend to savor it for all it is worth, for as long as it lasts. :D
HERE'S TO EPISODE 100, THE REST OF S5, AND SEASON SIX!!!
