Okay, so first I have to post eleven things?
1. I was born and raised on a farm in a very rural area. My dad was a farmer and my mom was a teacher.
2. I carry a swiss army knife and have done for more than twenty years. I am totally bummed about places that make me leave my knife in a bush outside. I was trained to cook with a paring knife only, so when we go camping I use my swiss army knife.
3. I haven't cut my hair since 1986!! It is almost down to my knees. And it is just like Chris Eccleston's -- very fine, light brown, -- though the highlight are reddish in the sun. :)
4. I have a PhD in English Literature, and an MFA in poetry. It took me 12 years to finish grad school, and I switched to teaching music instead, but I did finish!
5. I wrote a middle grades novel for NaNo last year and I'm totally going to get it published, I so am.
6. I married my dream man, and I still can't believe my great good fortune 18 years later.
7. I love to write songs. They can be silly or romantic, any kind of song. I can write to order! I've written a couple spn songs, but no who songs -- yet!
8. My mom is a fastidious housekeeper. I am really not a fastidious housekeeper. My house is mostly books.
9. I compulsively organize things while shopping -- books especially. I can't stand looking through a jumble. I fold sweaters at rummage sales.
10. I shop at thrift stores, yard sales, and rummages, and really prefer it that way. Though every so often, I do have to buy a new pair of pants. :)
11. I love jewelry! I have on five rings, a wide silver cuff, big earrings and a necklace right now, and that's just to wear around the house during the day. :)
1. Why do you write (or read) fanfiction?
I get really mentally involved in the lives of ongoing characters, and just one tv episode a week is not enough! Also, fanfic is BETTER than published stuff.
2. What's the best fanfic you've ever read, and why?
I don't think I can choose, but I must admit I love novel length stories or longer.
3. What movie are you ashamed to admit you like, but it's secretly one of your favorites?
I like a lot of movies that are considered dogs, but I'm not ashamed!! I think the common thread in movies I love that other people hate is a sense of campy fun. For instance, SPICEWORLD. What an awesome flick. Or, Josey and the Pussy Cats -- with Parker Posey and Alan Cumming as the villains, so brilliant.
4. Besides writing (or reading) fic, what's another one of your favorite hobbies?
I love to do collage from catalogs. Stay tuned for my annual Collage Valentine Request, when I take individualized collage requests!
5. Can you sing, or play an instrument? Don't just answer yes, goofballs. What is it?
Yes, I have a BA in music. I'm primarily a singer -- classically trained and all, but now I mostly sing folk music including Appalachian Ballad style. I also write songs, so if you need a song, seriously, let me know!! I also play piano, guitar, recorder, and I have a bunch of other little instruments of various kinds. I'm hoping that 2012 will see the kickoff of my new business as a Singing Telegram (not a kissogram, sorry Amy! My British friend says in England they really have kissograms!! shocking! ;)
6. What's a favorite memory from your childhood?
I had a happy childhood but a hazy memory. It seems like the traumatic bad things wear a deeper groove in the brain than the happy good things. I suppose a lot of my happiest memories revolve around time spent with my dad, just watching tv together, or going to the general store where he would visit with his friends in the afternoon, or driving to the stockyards or to buy a part for a tractor. I love the the mingled smell of diesel and dust.
7. What's your favorite time of year, and why?
Any day when it is bright and sunny.
8. Who's your favorite Doctor (if you're a who fan - if you're on my flist you probably are) and why?
My first Doctor was Four. Tom Baker was just so brilliant in the role -- with such flair, so much humor, yet a real sense of the power and genius of his character. He was utterly the Doctor. I also like Peter Davison when he took over. When I was a kid I watched Doctor Who late on Saturday nights on Public Television.... the serials seemed to go on forever, hours and hours!!
Then I was drawn back in by Christopher Eccleston. He stole my heart as the Doctor. I could watch s1 again and again. In the best tradition of Tom Baker, he is so at ease with the genius and power of his character, but so willing to be silly and completely unself-conscious. Then again, the powerful thing that Chris brought to the role was the sense of despair and lostness that the Doctor has felt since he was cut off from Gallifrey. You get the sense that his emotions are hanging by a thread, that he could break at any time. I love Tennant too, he's dazzling -- but Chris just does it for me. Gosh, it took me a long time to warm up to Matt Smith... I think I finally get who his Doctor is.... but he's not the one for me. If I could choose any Tardis to travel on, it would be with Nine, Rose and Jack. I just love them and in my mind they travel on forever.
9. What have you read or seen in fanfic that annoys you the most (specific examples are bad...you can probably figure out why)
I'm not easily annoyed by fanfic. I think what I'm more annoyed by is the way that fandom works.... Some stories are intricate and entertaining, but not perfectly well written. Some stories are not in character, but they're very romantic. Some stories are completely bizarre, but awfully exciting!
I think the thing that really bothers me, more than anything, is the dangling WIP. I think fandom should institute a RULE that if a wip is abandoned for more than a year, it is fair game for other writers to step in and shut the thing down.
10. What's a place unique to where you live that you enjoy the most? (landmark, restaurant, whatever) :)
We have a lovely neighborhood cafe where people go to hang out. I also like our grocery store where everyone goes to shop. :)
11. What's your breakfast of choice? My favorite breakfast is the Full English. It is the ideal breakfast not to be outdone. Start off with a delicious bowl of muesli, yogurt and fresh fruit. Then a plate with a fried egg, sausages, beans, toast, and a tomato. Last but not least, a very small glass of orange juice. And as much coffee as an American can drink. Ummmmmm, full English.
Now, for my questions to ask other people.
1. Describe the peaceful place you would think of if you were asked to imagine the most peaceful place for meditation.
2. What's the best trip you ever went on?
3. If the Doctor chose you for a companion, which Doctor would it be and why would he choose you? Or, if a Winchester called you, which Winchester would it be and why?
4. What's your favorite celebration at this time of year?
5. If you were a character in a story, and you were fighting to survive -- what kind of fight is it -- and do you survive?
6. Tell about a time when you or someone you know well experienced uncanny, miraculous, or that can't be explained by modern science.
7. Tell about something that totally makes you think of your otp.
8. Tell about a very memorable conversation you've had. It can be with a famous person or just a conversation that really stuck in your mind.
9. What's the most awesome thing you've ever seen?
10. Which art form touches you deepest? Is it an artform you've studied, or not? "Crafts" also count as art.
11. Tell about a dream that when you woke up, you realized was completely fannish.
