beta needed

I am writing for the Winter Companions summer challenge, and they require a beta.  Is anyone interested in reading 8,000 words of slashy Jack/Eleven by Thursday?   It's heavy SF concept, and I'd love if someone very familiar with canon could make sure I'm not completely flouting anything.  Like, why exactly is the Doctor forgotten by History? Does Jack's vortex manipulator currently work, or not? I'm hoping I successfully sidestepped these questions, and many more!

Jack has always been in love with the Doctor, but up until now, it's been unrequited.  Still, Jack is at peace with himself and the story explains why, and why, when the Doctor (Eleven, just post-Angels Take Manhattan) shows up to pick him up after hundreds of years have passed for both of them, Jack says no.  Happy ending!  Explicit!

I'm not sure I'm up on my Eleven canon (and frankly, I'm not sure even Moffatt knows why the Doctor is forgotten by history), and I don't know about Jack's vortex manipulator either, but I'd be happy to proofread for typos.

Totally agree with you about the canon issue. Did Clara write the Doctor out, or did that happen when Amy rebooted the Universe (argh, my least favorite plot element EVER). Or did River do it??? I don't even know. :P

I am hoping someone knows whether the VM works, but I kind of think the Doctor is just self-righteous enough that he left Jack with it disabled on purpose. !!!

I've always understood that the Doctor left the manipulator disabled from the end of the third season of Who onward. Certainly when Jack went off world in Children of Earth, he had to wait for a spaceship to come and pick him up. I don't recall any vortex manipulation in Miracle Day either unless I've forgotten something subtle.

So my vote would be that it is still disabled.

Yes, that is my understanding as well... it is just kind of horrifying if you think about it.... certainly as heavy-handed as bringing down Harriet Jones, without as much justification. o_O

I guess I was just kind of hoping, for Jack's sake, that he somehow gets it repaired. :(

Oops - I replied to this earlier just by hitting "reply" from the e-mail notification of your comment - does that actually work? Anyway, I'm half done with the editing, and I'm going to send you what I have, in case you want to get started on it. Does "by Thursday" mean "by the crack of dawn on Thursday" or "by the end of the day Thursday"? If it's the latter, I may leave it for tomorrow.

Can we split the difference about Thursday? Maybe by "close of business"? :) I'm away from computers from Friday till Monday night, and I have to submit the story on Tuesday. :P

The story is long on SF detail I know. Part of it is the prompt, which fired off my brain about this whole society Jack lives in, and I had a lot of fun with it. It was a lot of work, thinking it up and then pulling the strings to make sure it wouldn't unravel.
