state of the Liss
Oct. 22nd, 2013 09:39 amI'm so proud of my new icon. I painted it myself as a hex for my new porch. It uses traditional Pennsylvania Dutch design elements. I'm of that ethnicity, except the West Virginia variant. :)
The Blue Eight-pointed Star signifies Hospitality.
The Green Rosette is good fortune.
The four hearts, I think of as the Four Minds of Love: Loving Kindness, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity. I am learning about Godly Love from the Buddhist perspective of living saint, Thich Nhat Hanh. :)
The sheaves of Wheat represent abundance, also Bread and Beer, since the porch is a place of welcoming guests. :)
The border is a rainbow of brown, red, yellow and green. Usually an Amish border is plain brown, signifiying the bounds of earth, but I'm always more rainbow than that, and this has a bit of a Navaho, four directions type meaning -- so that hopefully the harmony will not just be on the porch but throughout the house, grounds, neighborhood, and near universe :)

Thanks so much everyone for your Fae-themed reccs yesterday. I love new music. I always lean toward music that is atmospheric, weird, gloomy, foreboding, magickal, which is why I'm a bit of a heavy metal fan. :)
Here are some old favorites from my Fae playlist:
Come to Me by Bjork
Bachelorette by Bjork (I have no idea what this song is about. it's the orchestration baby!)
Explode, Paralyzed by the Cardigans. Pretty much everything off of Gran Turismo.
Walk on Gilded Splinters. This is a song by Doctor John, but I like the cover by Kingswamp.
In the Light by Led Zeppelin. (One of my top favorite songs of all time of course).
Anywhere on this Road by Lhasa (may she rest in peace). If you do not know this song, run don't walk!
All my Relations by Ulali. Not for the faint of heart. You will cry your eyes out.
Across the Universe, the Beatles song covered by Fiona Apple.
Angeles, the Elliot Smith song that Jensen Ackles sings on Steve Carlson's album, Sharing the Covers.
I will follow you into the dark, by Death Cab for Cutie. This revised my plot this morning!!!
Bad Moon Rising, covered by Rasputina. A freaking Awesome cover.
I put a spell on you, covered by Marilyn Manson, from the Lost Highway soundtrack. Okay, this cover reveals the full deal of menace hidden in this song.
Louisiana Bride, Kingswamp's somewhat calmer take on the voodoo love charm.
Blue Ridge Mountains, by Fleet Foxes. What the heck is going on here. But it's very evocative.
Buda, by Sertab Erener. This song is in Turkish. I love Turkish pop.
Canvas, by Imogen Heap. This song was on the soundtrack in the back of the book Divergent, and led us into our current love affair with the mindblowing genius of Heap.
Center of the Sun, by Poe. Probably lots more Poe as well, but this is the current leader.
Excerpt from ABoneCroneDrone, by Sheila Chandra, from the RealWorld album Bliss. All hail Peter Gabriel.
Shanti Shanti Shanti by Sheila Chandra, hm, looks like I need more of her!!
Fly Me to the Moon by Anna Ternheim. this is one of the great gifts that has come to me from the internet, on a doctor who soundtrack, along with:
Wolf like Me, by Lera Lynn. an amazing cover of a song by Brooklyn band, TV on the Radio.
The Garden of Everything, by Maaya Sakamota and Steve Conte, from the anime RahXephon soundtrack.
and A good day, by Priscilla Ahn. I found her album in the Jazz section at my local used cd place. ??
Happiness Is... by Yungchen Lhamo. Her album Coming Home, by RealWorld.
Head, by Kirstie MacColl. This is the essence of being seduced by the Fae. It's the other side of Bjork's Come to Me.
Maybe Sparrow, by Neko Case, My sister led me to this little gem, and started us off down the whipcrack world of Neko Case.
Leave My Body by Florence and the Machine. Yay!
Nature Boy, performed by David Bowie and Massive Attack, on the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.
Salala, by Africa's greatest rock star Angelique Kidjo, with Peter Gabriel (all hail Peter Gabriel).
Washing of the Water, Red Rain, Blood of Eden, all hail the great Peter Gabriel.
Some Unholy War, by Amy Winehouse, I think her greatest masterpiece.
Trance Dance by Hamid Baroudi, off the album World Lounge. I love Putumayo Records. Purest gold.
Second Wind, a little masterpiece by Tracey Bonham, featured on my soundtrack for Dancers at the Lake, my first longer fic at 12000 words, a Sammy Messiah piece that is still one of my favorites.
So yay, my NaNo is developing a plot as a Quest. Quests work for me. :D
Drafted my Rose meets Two fic quite suddenly last night! thanks to Dev for the encouragement! :)
Several spn ficlets are percolating, yay!!

Date: 2013-10-22 05:25 pm (UTC)I'm glad you like the hex sign. When I painted my kitchen upon moving into this house in 2005, I painted a hex on the undersink doors with just the green rosette and six hearts, in a blue circle, with two fivepointed stars above for general warding. This is more elaborate but actually just as easy to execute, with one of those little craft palettes of acrylic paint from the dollar store. :)
