Happy April Fool's Day
Apr. 1st, 2014 10:58 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I wracked my brain to think of a good thing for April Fool's Day... I sent my son to school with stickers to pester his friend with who agreed to be Fooled. We found some One Direction stickers at the Dollar Store that were ideal. :D
He was all of a sudden this morning like "Quick! I'm supposed to propose a chapter of a novel to memorize!" So I was like "First chapter of Hitchhiker's Guide!" (which I in fact did memorize). So I sent him off to school with my copy of Hitchhiker in a plastic bag. :)
Anyway I hope your April Fool's Day is Amazingly Amazing, and that our dear Trickster shows you his prettiest smiles on this day.
I love silly songs so I'm going to try to build a playlist for you. Enjoy!
Don't Pay the Ferryman, by Chris de Burgh -- one of the most fannish songs ever to dominate the airwaves (well, after Stairway, which, it used to rumored that it was ALWAYS playing somewhere in the world). In the background, that is Tony Head intoning lines from the Tempest. I wrote fanfic for this song. It was BAD. :P
Here is One Night in Bangkok, from the musical Chess, which was written by the guys from ABBA. The singer here is Murray Head, brother of beloved fan icon Anthony Stewart Head. I love how everything is connected in the end. Here is a selection from a Rocky Horror Tribute where Amber Benson and Tony are singing songs in costume. I'm not a huge Rocky Horror fan, but I figure there's enough fannish crossover here with the two of them that people would like to see. :) Tony played Frank on the West End in the 90s -- see more here.
Most of the songs on this list are silly, but in case you've never really heard John Barrowman sing, wow, listen to him sing his personal theme song, I am What I am, from La Cage Aux Folles. His voice just blows me away. And his face, and his smile, and his personality, and his everything. He has a nice cameo in The Five(ish) Doctors too. :)
She Blinded Me with Science, by Thomas Dolby. Here he is playing live, intercut with the original video. He is my original steam punk Geek hero. I love that he has a keypad that just yells "Science!"
If the Tardis were a real live girl, she would be Imogen Heap, a complete cyborg musician. I ADORE HER. Here is First Train Home the first song I knew by her, because she was on the Divergent soundtrack in the back of the book! I wonder if she made it onto the movie soundtrack. Imogen can coin lyrics like "Temporal deadzone where clocks are barely breathing" and get away with it. :D
Here are Cast and Crew from Doctor Who doing a fanvid for Walk 500 Miles by the Proclaimers.
Also, here is the stunning and incredible video for Coin Operated Boy, by Dresden Dolls. And here is
counteragent's SPN Sam meta vid.
So, if you are a Lemony Snicket fan, I hope you know about the soundtrack from Gothic Archies. Here is Scream and Run Away.
Here is Amanda Palmer, Neil Gaiman, Stephen Merrit, and Moby on the Craig Ferguson show singing Science Fiction Double Feature. I believe this is why they invented that awesome "convert youtube to mp3" thing. Grab it while it's still up. :) I totally have a Schoenhut piano like the one Neil is playing. :D
Now for something completely different, here is Battu by Angelique Kidjo. It is THE cheeriest song I've ever heard.
Soul Bossa Nova by the Quincy Jones Orchestra. Here is the Austin Powers opening credit sequence. My son asked what we should do if we saw a celebrity in London. I told him we should throw our hands up in the air and scream and chase them and try to attract a mob.
.... and here are Wayne and Garth and the boys headbanging to Bohemian Rhapsody. :D
Punk Rock Heaven, by local Baltimore legend, Mary Prankster. Wherever you are, Mary, we love you!! Mary Prankster has a lot of great songs. You may also like Mac and Cheese.
".... but every boy who's made me mac & cheese has always turned out to be a violent sociopath."
Punk Rock Girl by Dead Milkmen.
Hot Dog, by Led Zeppelin. Please raise your hands if you knew Zep had a full-on rockabilly song. :D
Don't Worry, Be Happy, by Bobby McFerrin.
Oak Cliff Bra, by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians.
Birdhouse in your Soul, by They Might Be Giants. An old Favorite!! And
deirdre_c also has a Supernatural vid for it! :)
Flight of the conchords: Inner City Pressure. Parodies of West End Girl always so awesome. So here is also Jizz in My Pants by the Lonely Island NSFW! also,
runedgirl below reminds me about
deirdre_c's amazing vid that was like the song was especially written for Sam and Dean. LOLZ
And finally, for all you Veronica Mars fans, here is Kristen Bell with the sloth song. Yay Gregory Brothers!!
In case you wonder whether Gregory Brothers ever do original songs, of course they do. Here is their fun song about how ridiculous club music can get, feat. Special Guest PSY and much ironic twerking: DJ PLAY MY SONG (NO! LEAVE ME ALONE!) My favorite of theirs is probably still Double Rainbow. What does this mean?? It's so intense!!! :)
followed closely by Can't Hug Every Cat. :D
Bongo Bong by Manu Chao. I love world music and every so often there is a gem of wackiness.
Here is another: La Marmotteuse (ie. the Lady Groundhog). If a bunch of marmots ever had a shindig, this is what it would sound like.
OKAY!
Happy Day!
And I never even rick rolled you. :D

My BFF, a Bond fan, gave me a mixtape back in the day with I Know Him so Well on it, so I always think of that as a song about James Bond. :D
I never saw the vid for Punk Rock Girl before -- the lead singer looks about 14!! Har. I guess he's more like my age now. :)
