Steve and Bucky go to Brooklyn! --Friday
Jul. 7th, 2015 12:37 pmThis past weekend we took a minibreak and went to Brooklyn!!!
A Bolt Bus stops right in our neighborhood, so we boarded at 7 am and cruised in comfort to New York City in about four hours. The bus let us off at Penn Station/Madison Square Garden, where we had a nice lunch from food stalls and then took the A Train to Brooklyn. Whenever I hear the phrase A Train I immediately hear Duke Ellington's orchestra in my head. :)
We booked a room in Park Slope. The building was a newly remodeled brownstone. It wasn't as ratty and cool as Sherlock's in Elementary, sigh, but it was very clean, comfortable and spacious, and surprisingly affordable for a room in NY. Park Slope was quiet and pleasant with lots of shops and eating places.

Thor's kid brother has a very fine establishment in Park Slope.

Steve and Bucky pay their respects at the Soldiers' Memorial.

Steve loves the monumental architecture of the Main Brooklyn Public Library. The outside is covered with great quotations and gold leaf figures.

Steve and Bucky go to visit their old digs in Brooklyn Heights at 146 Montague Street. The room can't be seen from the street because of the extensive remodelling Steve is putting the building through before they move back. The neighborhood is amazing now. The trees are so tall and lush, and everything is so clean -- a far cry from how it was during the Depression when Bucky first let the room. The Brooklyn Historical Society is right around the corner, and has a map of where famous authors lived, including HP Lovecraft. Bucky has read a few of his stories, so they go to find his house at 169 Clinton. Weirdly enough, it ISN'T THERE.

Somebody else must also have gone looking for Lovecraft's house. Steve and Bucky pose beside the love lock.

Police in Brooklyn set up roadblocks with these planks, but they trigger Steve's civic awareness. "I don't think they should just leave them lying in the street, Buck. It looks like a crime scene!"
"Calm down and have a cookie at the Milk Bar." (We went to Momofuko's for the crazy good cookies. it was the Milk Bar at 371 Smith in Brooklyn, in Caroll Gardens, which used to be called South Brooklyn and was probably the somewhat seedier area where Steve grew up with his Ma. It did look like a crime scene tho, Steve was right. We did not buy a copy of Lucky Peach. The only book I bought was an Arcadia photo history of Coney Island.)

Steve and Bucky relax on the sand at Coney Island with a few bits of sea shell. They don't run the chair planes anymore, but the tower is still a landmark.

Just the sight of the Cyclone makes Steve sick. So rickety! and just a couple of years ago, it was surrounded by water! (Clint told Steve about Superstorm Sandy.) Bucky lets Steve off the hook and doesn't make him ride. :P

Bucky and Steve are surprised that the Nathan's stand is enormous now and sells all kinds of food. Steve can't bear the thought of a hot dog after seeing the Cyclone.

Burlesque at the Beach was great fun. Steve is a little embarrassed -- especially when Lefty Lucy comes out dressed as him in his private uniform -- then strips! and sexily puts on a Captain America costume!! The act is really funny and everyone seems to enjoy it. The performers don't allow photographs during their routines, but Steve and Bucky pose in front of the rainbow flag and the US Colonial flag in honor of Independence Day. All the way home Steve muses about burlesque as an art form -- how the entertainers banter and engage with the audience and how the acts are funny and sexy and daring all at the same time. Bucky used to go to the burlesque shows back in the day, but Steve was too uncomfortable to watch dames swing their tassels. He met a lot of chorus girls after that, and understands body pride a little more now -- but he saw a least one audience member who got too embarrassed and had to leave.
We made it back to our brownstone by 130 am or so. Whoosh! When we go on vacation we like to pack the days. :)

Date: 2015-07-08 12:06 pm (UTC)Also the wikipedia article about the Cyclone is great. I hadn't realized that there are several mirror replicas of the Cyclone also in operation in different places around the world. Steve probably sees the Cyclone EVERYWHERE and thinks he is having some sort of flashback!!!
