Brooklyn-- Saturday
Jul. 8th, 2015 01:01 pmA thing we love to do is eat really delicious food. This morning at my chiropractor's there was a Conde Nast Traveller's magazine from 2013 that listed the 70 greatest restaurants in the world, and drum roll please, the place we ate on Friday was in there!!! Pok Pok NY is a little Thai place that is not pretentious or even very expensive, but MAN that was some incredibly unique and delicious food. Wow, it was good. We arrived at around 515 and people were lining up (there are only limited reservations). We ordered three "salads": mushrooms, pork, and eggplant. I can't describe how delicious they were except to say that they were very intensely flavored with uniquely Thai herbs. With the pork even came this dish of like, plant materials, that included Thai Basil and a stalk of Romaine, but also several other things we have never seen before, that tasted SO FANTASTIC WITH THE PORK. The eggplant was expertly cooked and was so good with a little pork next to it. Also, the mushrooms were ideal. NOM, all the noms.
On Saturday morning we wanted juice, so we found JuiceLand juice bar and had wheat grass shots and smoothies, then to Colson Patisserie. Then we walked a long way and had brunch at the Pickle Shack. The pickle shack is also a source of delicious food made by a chef, and it is all pickles. We didn't realize till afterwards that it was vegetarian! (We are opportunistic feeders.)
[We went to Cafe Martin twice -- upon arrival, and on Sunday after Beygl. ]
Here are Steve and Bucky perusing the slate of incredibly delicious pickles:

The ones on the left were SO INTENSE: hop pickles, made with essential oil of hops, derived in England!! Those are chipotle carrot pickels, pickled green beans, pickled cauliflower, and whiskey sour pickles. The latter are really good -- but nowhere near as intense as the ones on the left. We also had some HELLA good fries and a Banh Mi with tofu and kim chi, om nom nom. (We basically live on tofu and kimchi in daily life because my husband's parents were in the Peace Corps in Korea when he was born.)
Steve would really like another hop pickle. Bucky is afraid the hop pickles are trying to TAKE OVER HIS BRAIN they are so good!!!
Hail Brooklyn Brine and the Pickle Shack!
After lunch it rained on us and we shopped at UniQlo. Then we went to Williamsburg.
Steve especially liked the poster:

We found this interesting little place in Williamsburg, the New York City Reliquary. Steve and Bucky really liked it!
That statue of liberty looks small till you see them at her feet!
Steve is happy with the shamrocks.
She's gonna wash those men right outta her hair!! (a different Lady I think)
Steve and Bucky really like the love locks we kept seeing everywhere, especially surrounded by bottle caps from Brooklyn Brewery.
Later, we went to a pretentious cheese shop and bought some excellent cheese and delicious sodas. That Fentiman's CherryTree Cola. I would pay for that again. It was PERFECT.

In an Italian part of the neighborhood, there was some sort of pole with a pope on top of it. Bucky is supportive while Steve has his respectful Catholic moment.

Back in Park Slope, at a normal restaurant, eating an Elk burger (it was okay). Steve and Bucky liked the enormous tub. It reminded them of the washtub they used to have, but a whole lot bigger. :)

Date: 2015-07-09 06:14 pm (UTC)I'm glad your postcard arrived safely!
after due consideration, I kind of wish someone had gone on the cyclone. I'm not one for roller coasters in general, but this one doesn't go upside at all and only lasts a minute and a half. .... who am I kidding? NOT UNLESS I WERE PAID GOOD MONEY.
