... LET ME SHOW YOU THEM.

1.  Song by Shinedown = Sam's theme exiting s4.

Please don't cry one tear for me
I'm not afraid of what I have to say
This is my one and only voice
So listen close, it's only for today:
Tell my mother, tell my father I've done the best I can
To make them realize this is my life, I hope they understand
I'm not angry, I'm just saying
Sometimes goodbye is a second chance
2. Finally Able to put my Love for Dean Winchester into Words

A very stupid song by Theory of a Deadman finally allowed me to put My Love for Dean into words. Do you know that in the song "Here I go Again" by Whitesnake (an eighties hair metal classic), David Coverdale originally sang, "Like a hobo I was born to walk alone..." but for the American release, he changed it to "Like a drifter?" Talking about this with my husband, as we hilariously imagined an A&R guy showing Coverdale slides of a Hobo (a stubbly old guy in patched clothes and crumpled hat, smoking a stubby cigar while cooking a can of beans and a weiner on a stick over a trashcan fire) vs a Drifter (Clint Eastwood, or the like, in a long black duster, riding into town and cooly surveying the wrongs that need set right)....

As a little kid, one of my favorite TV shows was "Kung Fu" (I was born in 1968).  In it, David Carradine strolled barefoot through the southwest, speaking softly, carrying a bamboo flute, yet always ending up in a big kungfu faceoff because he had to defend the Widow against the Corrupt Landlord.  It was so VERY awesome a show.

Then later, more of you right remember David (Bruce) Banner, warning people NOT to make him angry!  and always thumbing a ride out of town at the end of every episode...

So for a while now, I've been trying to understand my EXTREME LOVE for the character of Dean Winchester.  It's not just that he loves his brother more than himself.  It's not just his love for the shlocky underside, the cheeseburgers, the ROCK MUSIC, the Impala, and the moment for the corny joke. It's not even JUST his desire to save people while hunting things or even that he puts a smile on the face of the tired waittress.

I also knew that I was really reluctant to see Dean as anything more than Everyman.  He's not Bruce Wayne, Billionaire Industrialist -- he's just a guy with a nice car, skill at pool, and a winning face over a fake credit card.  He's not Tony Stark,  even if he keeps a 40 year old gas guzzler purring down the road, or can build his own emf reader and electropulse, kills ghostfacer hard drives dead device.  He's just a guy-- like my dad, who could drop a deer with a 30.06, rebuild a corvette, fly a small plane, wire a house, birth a calf, answer all the questions on Jeopardy, and read himself to sleep every night. A guy with grease ground in under his nails, but who would have been prissy if he'd had a chance.

Still, I think what really gets me with Dean is that he does all these things AS A DRIFTER.  Dean is the ultimate Drifter.  He's given up not just his home, but every chance at a home, because he has a mission and he's sticking with it. It's not for nothing that when I went to make my own Metallica t shirt, it read ROVER, WANDERER, NOMAD, VAGABOND.

Dean is a man who longs for a home, but won't settle down when there's work to do.  He's a man that's made to love his family more than life itself -- but he won't give in to making a family for himself.

Dean's sacrificial devotion to his calling is, apparently, my definition of a righteous man.

4.  I post, yet do not get comments.  :(

5.  Jimmy Novak =
portmanteau of Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak from Vertigo -- a person who seems to be one person yet appears to be possessed by another, a person who is afraid of falling because his comrade in arms fell.

You know, I think what attracted me to Supernatural overall (and to Dean in particular) is that sense of wandering. It strikes a deep chord. :)

And YES to that Shinedown song. So much yes.

I should go to bed now, I’m totally not coherent. Just wanted to say: I agree with this post! *g* Most especially the Jimmy Novak part! :D

thanks for your comment!

The Wandering ethos in Supernatural is very American to us -- that sense of the powerful car and the open road -- possibilities paid for in loneliness-- the little towns with the welcoming diners and skinned-over secrets... how does it read to you as a Brit?

I've recently been thinking how much I loved your Girl!Sammy story. I just really enjoyed that portrait of who Sam might have been....

Jimmy Novak -- my husband and I were talking about how Misha plays Castiel tres Noir and all of a sudden BOOM it slapped us in the face.

Here is my plastic!Sam all shadowy with his Ruby

Well, I grew up with a rather itinerant lifestyle (I’ve only lived in seven or eight towns but around 30 different houses in my life, me and my mom could never settle and we always owed people money!) and I guess on a very personal level, I love that wandering, drifter lifestyle. Like it’s in my blood! I never quite settle anywhere and Supernatural is the first show I’ve watched where it’s like – Hey, that’s okay! There are totally other people living like that. Not having roots in any one place.

Awww, thanks, honey! I was thinking about girl!Sammy just this morning, weirdly. I do fancy writing more about her.

OMG, how cute is your plastic Sammy? :D Love him!

Gosh, the last SPN episode made me want to write this epic AU Dean/Castiel I’ve had going through my head for months. Getting to know Jimmy Novak, as it were, is totally spurring me on. Like I don’t have enough to work on! :P

I had the very opposite of an itinerant lifestyle -- my family on both sides settled in this little valley in the Appalachian mountains about 200 years ago, and I moved away in 1990, eight generations later! I can't bear to move from place to place -- but I am in love with the idea of it, especially the idea of driving to the horizon. On our honeymoon my husband and I quit our jobs and went driving through the south and southwest -- Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico -- till finally we'd been on the road about 6 weeks and we were like OK let's go home now! then we did those great 14 hour days of driving that took us through Dodge and Little Rock etc. It was a great trip and we want to do it again someday.

I had this funny idea of "what if John had bought the vw microbus instead of the impala?" how would their lives have been different? can you imagine a mobile, runed up, salt encrusted minibus? full of the years of samndean? what a groovy picture it paints.

My plastic boys are awesome. I also have a scary plastic Lilith I haven't photographed yet!!

I lived in 5 places by the time I was 5, and we settled for good in VT when I was 10, but when I was 27 I moved to Savannah, lived there for 3 years, then moved to Madison. I move apartments about every 3 years, it seems. I think it's just ingrained in me. It keeps me from acquiring too much crap, which is the opposite of my mother, who has 2 lifetimes worth of useless junk she keeps trying to pawn off on me.

If you give me your pairings, I will totally ask for a drabble! I love having fic written for me.

my LJ delivers comments straight into my main email account, and every so often when I reply I mistakenly reply from email instead of from the little message box. That's when I worry about OUTING MYSELF to the world at large!! but I am not worried about you in particular, just about my SEKRIT IDENTITY in general. Of course anyone who knew me in RL would instantly know that it was me... :) I am CLARK OPPENHEIMER.

and

OF COURSE, THAT IS MY FAVORITE PSYCHEDELIC FURS SONG. and now it is playing in my head!!

"inside you the night moves, and she don't fade, the ghost in you, she don't fade..."

I will Dean/Castiel you asap.

THANKS for the request!!

Oh, I do that too sometimes and then I'm all like "duuuh" and delete it before I send. Thankfully.

You must listen to this version of the song by Duncan Sheik. It is so pretty!

And thank you for writing me fic!

Hi! I have very few icons, so each one has to COUNT. I just love Misha's concerned, puzzled, thoughtful face in this one. He is SO ALIEN ANGEL in an utterly sympathetic way.

the icon is by airiny

and thanks for commenting! i use my icons meaningfully so it's cool when someone notices them!

so here you go, the sad icon of sam in a cage.
He has been in the cage before for many reasons, but NONE SO SAD.

Came for the icon, stayed for the thoughtful commentary. You and I are of an age. I remember "Kung Fu" and still quote it to my kids although they have never seen it. In my opinion, you have hit the nail on the head with your commentary on Dean.

Dean's sacrificial devotion to his calling is, apparently, my definition of a righteous man.

I guess this is why I hold tight to characters like Dean, and other media creastions like him. It is also the reason that I have no interest in competitive shows like Survivor. I want to spend my time and emotional energy on the righteous man (or woman) and not on the greedy/self-interested one.

hey! let's friend up then!

I realize a lot of folks say "grasshopper" but how many have thrilled to hear David Carradine say, in his whispery voice, "i do not wish... to fight" and then proceed to KICK ALL THE ASSES.

\o/

I was reading metas about why folks love Sam and I just wanted to give my love for Dean its due. It seemed very hard to get to the real reason I feel so deeply for the character. But this at least has something to do with it.

Great. I already added you as a friend. RE Kung Fu: My son tells my younger daughter, "Patients grasshopper!" but he's never seen the show. I really should find them a Kung Fu dvd box set and the Monkees too, while I'm reliving my childhood. I bought them the Planet of the Apes TV show after my son stayed up for a movie marathon and loved it (***Curse you all to hell**** pounds the sand with fist).

Ha! Back again so soon 'cause I just needed to add some Dean love. I have to admit I care much more about Dean than I do about Sam. I think that I identify with his role as a parent/peacemaker in his family. He is obviously and deeply in love with his family members and willing to give up anything for them. Meanwhile, his father and his brother are harder for me to care about as much because they are more driven by self-interest...in this case revenge. The fact that both of them are willing to chuck Dean to the curb on occassions, when it is obvious that Dean needs family the way he needs air, makes them less heroic in my eyes. It was interesting at the end of Jump the Shark to hear/see Dean's reactions to Sam. I wonder if he is starting to question if they deserve the devotion he has given them.
