Jesse's parents were knocked out, by Castiel, to be sure they wouldn't interfere with his killing Jesse before somebody told Jesse angels don't exist. Andy's adoptive mom died, same MO as Mary Winchester. I'm not sure the victims in Family Remains count as a functional nuclear family--one kid dead pre-ep, the parents on the verge of separating--but I'm pretty sure the Braedens count.

I have two immediate responses.

#1, re Lisa Braeden and her son -- what struck me about The Kids Aren't Alright wasn't how Lisa was posited as Deviant from the Norm, but rather, how the home and family she and her son created for each other was valorized and upheld as something Dean desperately desired to enter. What I also think we see in that episode is a fairly strong critique of the isolation women endure within the idealized suburban lifestyle. The other mom, Annette Doolittle, is told what her reactions should be to the death of her estranged husband and to the weird behavior of her daughter -- her own instincts and emotions are denied validity -- and this is actually in conversation with Lisa. So then, strangely enough, the single mom circumstance of Lisa shows us a strong woman making it on her own, and providing lots of love and stability for her child, without the interference of Wild Men like Dean -- whereas when Annette's ex is killed, people can only see that far into her situation and no further into the things that are Really Wrong.

In terms of Jesse, I couldn't help viewing through the lens of Twilight Zone -- I kept imagining that his parents, much like his birthmom, had voluntarily removed themselves from his creepy presence. We do see them, but only upstairs asleep in their bed. I can't help but wonder if they will breathe a guilty sigh of relief when they find him gone. It's very sad, since he did love them -- but having reality warp around them must've been a daily occurrence in their household!!

If I were to make a generalization from these two portrayals, it's that children are the one hand, beloved, but on the other -- parasitic and potentially monstrous. This plays out throughout the s3 situations noted above (with the one exception of Lanie Greenfield in relation to the crocotta impersonating her mom. ) It is also interesting that Bela is a daughter in an intolerable position -- and that her choice to make a deal with a crd at age 14 results in her later monstrosity. ---All this is informing the Lilith -"Tammi"- Ruby fic I'm currently brewing :)

Jesse's parents are so onscreen. It's for about ten seconds before Jesse takes off for Australia, neither of them is awake never mind speaking, but they are definitely onscreen.
