Dean's Mix Tapes

Well, I have been working on Dean's Mix Tapes for some time now.
I started out with two mix CD's that had a bit too much Robert Johnson on them-- I like Robert Johnson just fine, but the recordings are pretty quiet and don't really fit in with the Ozzy and ZZ Top and all. I also really love Ralph Stanley singing "O Death" -- I am a ballad singer so I listen to his performance a lot as a masterwork -- but again, the difference in tone! Also I like Heart singing their fun D/s song, Black on Black, but it is produced a little too screechy for my ears -- those are the notable outtakes. Thanks to everyone who post their favorite Dean songs!
Here is my mix CD, Impala rocks on!
Back in Black, by AC/DC -- obviously! and a great rocker to open with.
Whipping Post, by Allman Brothers -- good mood setter for Dean. Plus I can really see John loving the Allman Brothers (since Dean is supposed to get a lot of his musical taste from John, which by the way I totally don't buy!)
Renegade, by Styx -- well yeah. I never really knew this song, but it is a lot better than most Styx songs, though I used to like "Rockin the Paradise" ...
Fight the Good Fight, by Triumph -- oh, I was so psyched when this showed up on the show's soundtrack!! This has been one of my favorite songs forever -- given to me on a mixtape by a friend back in high school -- and the first song I ever bought as an iTune -- it took four hours to download by dialup! Dean knows every word of this song by heart. Plus the guitar solo is such a Stairway tribute.
King Nothing, by Metallica. There are too many awesome Metallica songs to be able to truly do Metallica justice on one mix CD. This is just my personal favorite full-on kickass Metallica song. Dean in a good mood loves to belt this `out !
Achilles' Last Stand. A very Winchestery choice and a choice from the back catalog among Zep masterpieces. Plus it's 10 minutes long! Dean relies on the really long Zep songs as they're cruising endlessly from point a to godforsaken point b.
Voodoo, by Godsmack. Awesome, atmospheric song. Plus our boys have never gone up against Voodoo. What's up with that? Dean loves Godsmack and Alice in Chains (remember Rooster at the end of Folsom Prison Blues?)
I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide, by ZZTop. This song is pure Dean. (I'm sure John loves ZZTop as well.) Dean can't wait for an excuse to get a gold tooth. Other songs I left off this CD are La Grange, which is also pure Dean, but not quite as High Octane Dean.... and Mexican Blackbird, which Dean would not realize is too offensive to play in front of anyone.... ("Just drive that old Chrysler to Mexico, boys....)
Ramble On. Yeah, this is a song their mom would have liked. She was a big Zep fan.
Over the Mountain, by Ozzy Ozborne. I got tired of Crazy Train on my first mix, and switched this in. I am so glad! This has moved up to become perhaps my favorite Ozzy song! (Tho Iron Man, as performed by the Cardigans, rules. Dean wouldn't like it tho.) The guitars are really, really great on this song. The magic and the journeying in this song makes it a great Dean song, for sure.
Haunted, by Poe. Sammy was very surprised to learn that Dean likes Poe. Dean refuses to explain. See below for why.
Joy of Labour, by Motorhead. Some Supernatural fan (thanks whoever you are! I tried to figure out where I found it, but couldn't remember!) turned me on to this song, which is not very well known at all -- it's low on the iTunes playlist, and not on the big 30-40 song compilation CD that I found -- but it is by far the best and most Winchestery Motorhead song that I've heard. It's about a young man who gets taken by devils and made to do their work on the killing floor!! Dean drives Sam crazy listening to this song over and over, late at night. Lemmy actually sings in harmony with himself on this song. Plus it has a great riff.
Mach 5, by the Presidents of the United States of America. This is such a fun little song. And the southern accent of the lead singer is so attractive! Plus there is much revving of engines. Dean loves this song.
Hey Pretty, by Poe. Dean heard this song by Poe being played on the college radio station at a coffeehouse in Stanford, when he was surreptitiously checking up on Sammy. He heard the mix with her brother reading the excerpt from his book first, and he was so taken by the Pure HOTNESS in her voice at first listen that he tracked down her two studio albums at a public library and dubbed them from CD onto cassette. Plus the storyline of this song is something Dean can relate to. One of the very few post-1985, non-metal recording artists Dean will tolerate. (Shut up, Sam, the guy from Keane sounds like a girl! and not in the butch, Rik Emmett way either! Shut your cakehole! Ok, we can listen to them only when you are driving, and I'm wearing earplugs.)
Another of Dean's Mixtapes, Recorded from Vinyl
This mixtape was originally John's and therefore Dean is let off the hook about the emo nature of some of these songs, which he learned to love as a kid before he realized how overwrought they are! (Especially the Kingdom Come, Dad, jeez!)
Black Sabbath: Iron Man, War Pigs
Van Halen: And the Cradle Will Rock, Jamie's Crying
Kingdom Come: 17, What Love Can Be
Scorpions: Still Loving You, There's No One Like You, Rock You Like a Hurricane
Def Leppard: Photograph, Rock of Ages, Foolin
Aerosmith: Walk this Way, Sweet Emotion, Dream On, Come Together, Back in the Saddle Again
