Emmy nominations pondered by Ackles fan
Jul. 23rd, 2008 10:36 amWell, I was happy for Jensen to be on the ballot for an Emmy nomination and I'm sorry he didn't get farther, but here are the guys who were actually nominated in the category Best Lead Actor in a Dramatic Series:
Gabriel Byrne (b. 1950) as Paul, In Treatment • HBO •
Bryan Cranston (b. 1956) as Walt White, Breaking Bad • AMC •
Hugh Laurie (b. 1959) as Dr. Gregory House, House • FOX •
James Spader (b. 1960) as Alan Shore, Boston Legal • ABC •
Jon Hamm (b. 1971) as Don Draper, Mad Men • AMC •
Michael C. Hall (b. 1971) as Dexter Morgan, Dexter • Showtime •
So just to get the nomination he was up against Gabriel Byrne, Hugh Laurie and James Spader! JAMES SPADER!!
I don't know anything about the other guys. But I am comforted that four out of six of the nominees are significantly older than Ackles. Even the two youngest are like seven years older than him. Also, four out of six guys are on shows that are cable (one reason why I haven't seen them! I refuse to pay for tv no matter how good it is -- I can't stand commercials).
Can anybody else put into words what I'm reacting to here? It's like Supernatural is a youth culture product, and no matter how good a job Jensen does on that show, he's not going to be competing with these older guys who are doing grownup work. I'm sure I'm not saying this exactly right. My husband is an actor, and he's more critical of SPN than I am, and his criticism is that you can predict a CW reaction in any given scene. That kind of predictability can limit the choices an actor makes, and thus it's a constriction on the acting -- no matter how well the actor carries out his work.
I love Supernatural, I love Dean, and I really wish Jensen could win an Emmy for the great job he's done. I care SO MUCH about his character it's not really healthy! :) It makes me think of the wry look on Jensen's face when he says in one of the DVD extras, "Hi, I'm Jensen Ackles, and you may know me from the award winning show.... Dawson's Creek."
Well at least SPN got a nomination: best sound editing for Jus in Bello. Better than nothing! and great to acknowledge the exceptional work from the SPN crew!
So here's to remembering that when Jensen first went to work on Days of Our Lives, he garnered three nominations for the Daytime Emmies: 1998, 1999, and 2000, for Outstanding Younger Actor in a Daytime Series, and won the award from Soap Opera Digest for 1998, Outstanding Male Newcomer.
So...... I was rewatching the Magnificent Seven last night (the movie, 1960). I still think Jensen can act CIRCLES around Steve McQueen, who incidentally, was 30 when he made that movie, and had been on TV and in The Blob prior to that. I have HIGH HOPES for My Bloody Valentine as an opportunity for Jensen to do something a little different.... (hopefully not more like Devour or like Jared in House of Wax -- worst. role. ever!!! at least he got a lot of time off to tour around Australia!)
If Ackles is hoping to emulate a career, how about MR. SPADER! oh, slurp! (Ackles and Spader competing for mental headspace... higher brain functions shutting down..... *droooooool*) here's your coffee, mr. spader, mr. ackles --- anything else I can do for you? *sigh*
Also, happy belated birthday to Jared. Another year older, wiser, and manlier! I know I'll always be 14 years older than him, but does he not get just BETTER LOOKING EVERY YEAR! criminey!

Date: 2008-08-07 12:53 am (UTC)I don't understand how an award show that values High School Musical and Sarah Silverman singing a song about having imaginary sex with Matt Damon, can look at a character like Dean and decide that Jensen's performances just isn't good enough.
*shrug* I think one thing British TV has going for it is that nobody is rewarded for being popular. They reward the talented and the hard working.
I also have high hopes for MBV being a step in the right direction for Jensen. The 3D aspect has a few people wondering, but I read that Jensen took the role for the character development and I believe that, so...fingers crossed, a few more people see what us Supernatural viewers have been seeing all along.

Date: 2008-08-07 10:57 am (UTC)We did actually watch the first episode of House on DVD last night. It was OK. Hugh Laurie really is a superb actor, and of course he's doing a more award shows attracting type of role -- irascible doctor who always rudely states the truth. He's funny and charismatic.
The thing I love about SPN is its unique blend of action, spookiness, brotherly love, banter, and comedy -- and, I think Jensen has truly taken that show to a level no one could've expected -- and he's taken Jared along for that ride, which I think Jared would be the first to admit. I even think SPN might outrank X Files in terms of two actors so completely in synch in terms of their emotional give and take on screen. One of my other LJ friends pegged it as Jensen's emotional vulnerability onscreen -- and that really is it -- but it's also how Jensen has kind of provided that lead for Jared to follow, and Jared has also stepped up. MAN I LOVE MY SHOW!
One of the best things was how much Jensen loved making episode 1.3, Dead in the Water. and I think it's because he saw then that he was really gonna be allowed to ACT -- he did a great job in Pilot and Wendigo, but it was in the third ep that he really took hold Dean and began to inhabit him. There's still a good bit of Alec in Dean in the Pilot I think!!
Poor guy, I hope he feels the fan love without being made too uncomfortable by it. I know he probably thinks we're all just drooling for him, but I really respect his work! NO REALLY!!
