please don't go!
Apr. 14th, 2011 09:50 amThis exodus from Livejournal is bothering me. :(
I've noticed in the past week that service interruptions have gone way down. I think lj has done a pretty good job in responding to the attacks. It's still a bit jumpy, but I can't bear to think about leaving my lj behind. :(
There's one big difference between LJ and an archive. LJ is primarily a journal, with the capacity to incorporate large hunks of writing or links to other types of work. How are vidders responding? LJ lets us get at least a glimpse into one another's lives. It's a huge step forward from the old days of listservs. Dudes, I was a lurker for well over a decade. It was only LJ that brought me out of that -- the way it invite comments and helps you to form relationships as you learn about other people through their postings.
I fear change, so maybe that's why I haven't gone over to DW... it seems to work okay for my very tech savvy friends. it took me forever to figure out Lj, how to post and where to post, not that i'm even that great at it, but picking up how to work in a new environment is too daunting. i just don't have time for that right now.
another writer that I follow is closing her journal. D: I need an AO3 invite because apparently the queue is pretty slow -- if anyone happens to have an invite I'd be very grateful. *hopeful look*

Date: 2011-04-14 02:03 pm (UTC)I'm at A03 - it's archive only - no discussion. Are you wanting to archive your fics then? I don't have a code, they seem to release two a year. I'll look into it for you if you don't get one today!

Date: 2011-04-14 02:24 pm (UTC)Idk. I'm more interested in following my friends' work on AO3 than archiving their myself. I'm fairly religious about my flist and read about 90% of what my flisters post even if I don't have a comment. I know a lot about your mules and your ink and your interior decorating ideas and your area snowfalls and your love for ASL!!! which makes me very happy in my introverted yet hopefully friendly way. Dolls confuse me though!! :P (it's because I'm not primarily a visual thinker maybe)
thanks for responding!!

Date: 2011-04-14 04:32 pm (UTC)Do you think LJ and DW are equivalent? One of my friends over there, somnolentblue, manages very well and likes a lot of features. But it took me so long to find my comms here.... sigh.

Date: 2011-04-14 04:39 pm (UTC)I think people are really afraid their fic will go down in flames. I always keep a copy on my hard drive, so I'm not afraid of that.... I'm afraid of losing touch with my flisters, whose posts are so amazing, entertaining, and inspiring. This is my social networking site, so socially, it's my place to be!
I'll stay as long as I can make it work. I did have some problems posting that first week, but it's gotten much, much better recently. I literally lurked for about fifteen years on listservs (I started out as an XFiles fan), and it was only the lj format that required me to get an identity and finally commit to joining in. So I kind of OWE lj for that, in the best way.
:D

Date: 2011-04-15 01:41 pm (UTC)ITA - the whole point of LJ for me is the discussion! There'd be no point posting my every thought if people didn't comment on it :P
I'm so glad you stopped lurking! :D Your posts are great. Especially that SPN song - incredible!

Date: 2011-04-14 04:51 pm (UTC)When I saw LL was closing her journal, I freaked a little. I'm so used to just going to her home page and finding what I wanted right there.
I'm sure you can do a masterpost at AO3, but I haven't even got most of my fic switched over. I'm trying to import my LJ to Dreamwidth, but it hasn't worked yet. In short, I'll still be on LJ and I hope too many other people won't leave completely.

Date: 2011-04-14 09:47 pm (UTC)I have a permanent paid account, so I'm not going anywhere, and I haven't written enough I think to warrant an AO3 invite, anyhow. I'm migrating my stuff to DW because I think a backup is a good idea.

Date: 2011-04-19 03:38 pm (UTC)Journals are fun, but I've just been waiting around until an archive I liked well enough came along. For me, the whole LJ era is kind of a blip between my early experiences with archives, usenet, and lists and a new era of archives and me re-joining lots of lists.
I hate seeing people scatter too, but it's happened so many times to me already. Every time there's an exodus from FFN (and there have been hundreds), there's discussion about what the fragmentation will do to fandom. I suspect that many people who came into fandom when LJ was already big will always come back to LJ or LJ-like sites, just like I'll always have a hankering for large, multifandom archives. It's upsetting when specific people leave, I know, but I don't think everybody is going to flee and leave you all alone on LJ. :) If people are going now, I suspect the attacks are just a catalyst for a change that was already in the works for a long time.
AO3 does allow embeds of video or graphics, though it's not exactly great for vids yet, IMO. Just for me personally, it's easier to post fic or vids there because I don't feel like I'm imposing on my flist or demanding comments on something in a fandom they're not interested in. Anybody who finds my work on an archive is actively looking. It's also easier for me to post more controversial things or things that embarrass me there because it's more removed from RL posts. I feel like there's a little bit of emotional distance.
