Dean Singing

Throw us a fricking bone, Kripke!
The creators of Supernatural missed an opportunity to make fans very very very happy, by having Dean sing Silent Night very badly and not even remember all the words.
Ok, it was a funny joke when he, thinking on his feet, began to sing, but then they missed a great opportunity.
I'm not saying Jensen Ackles is the best singer in the world. I'm just saying, we know he can sing, and we want to hear him sing more, very desperately. Come on!! How many fans have downloaded the video where he sings at Asylum, or at his friend's wedding for heaven's sake, or the Steve Carlson song where he sings backup. If Carlson offered that song on iTunes it would have so many hits.
We don't need Dean to fumble and be off key. It would be just as funny for Sammy to know the words but not the melody, and Dean the melody but not the words! Why do this to us!!
When Dean sang the verse from "I can't fight this feeling anymore," it was pretty. He did a good job. His natural style is not in the same idiom as REO (imho, REO suck) -- Ackles has a rough-hewn, country/southern rock cast to his voice that's very appropriate to Dean Winchester. I wonder what he sounded like in high school, singing Tony in West Side Story -- pretty though he certainly is, and a good actor even then I bet, I'm sure the casting director wouldn't let him sing unless he could do it. He even recorded a song on a soap opera stars type album. If anyone has links I'd love to hear that!
So I'm disappointed. I love my show, but I really wanted to hear Dean sing some more and they totally blew it.
Wouldn't it have been great to hear Dean's voice singing out, "sleep in heavenly peace" all sweet and innocent like? while Sammy struggles along in the background?
You know, when Jayne picks up the guitar and plays and sings (was that in the movie? I don't recall) it was awesome, because musical talent deepens a character -- as does any talent, interest, or ability we didn't know they had. (Ben Edlund, my hero, wrote the episode of Firefly with the Ballad of Jayne Cobb in it. I'm sure Ben wants Dean to sing. More Ben episodes!!! Strike, I command thee, be over!!!!)
I just hope Ackles didn't sing badly on purpose to stop fans asking him to sing all the time.
Anyway, I think the show violates its own canon by Dean not being able to sing Silent Night. We know Dean can sing, and who doesn't know the melody to Silent Night? Dean thinks in terms of music so I know he would know this melody. Maybe it's just because I'm a music teacher, but it's not funny to not be able to sing -- it's more interesting when someone actually can sing very well.
My husband reminds me that one of the best jokes in the very funny movie, Love Actually, is when Hugh Grant has to impromptu sing a carol and then his staff person joins in very beautifully.
I liked the episode. but I was sorry about the singing or lack thereof. Poo.
