I'm not sure what I expected from 10.01 but I guess this was it.
I am sad to see Dean reduced to such a travesty of himself. Dean would never say such horrible things to a woman he slept with. hells_half_acre had a good point, that his defensive insult was basically a mirror of how he views himself. Like, of the two of them, he is the skank. But what a horrible thing to say.
The waitress's name is Ann Marie and she is played by Emily Fonda.
It does bode well that Dean is not Crowley's mindless puppet. And it is interesting that Crowley thinks he now has a best friend. That cure is still at work inside Crowley in some way.
So what IS Dean now. Clearly he abhors what he has become. There is no way not to think back and see the furious demon of Dean's s3 nightmare "THIS is what you're gonna become!!" because now Dean is repeatedly becoming it.
So here is my theory about the Mark and what it does to Dean. We saw it take him over, and we saw that the First Blade is thirsty for blood and violence. But when it is fed, it seems to die back a little. Dean didn't go black eyes throughout this ep -- only in the camera footage, and Crowley explicitly tells him he called up Abaddon supporters so Dean could get his Blade rocks off. The police don't even have an APB out on him because they feel the killing was in self-defence. (Sounds hinky to me? Surely there would need to be some kind of court proceeding regardless in the case of a killing?)
What it looks like to me is that Dean is still in exactly the same shape he was in before the final ep last season: he has the mark on him, the Blade feeds through him, and the rage of the Blade is always building inside him. He is Mad Bad and Dangerous to know. He took himself away from Sammy and is deliberately distancing himself from everyone except Crowley, who, in fact, is a decent ally at this point in time. Except that Crowley told Sam where Dean is, so now Dean is on the run again.
I feel like Dean is possessed by a cursed object. The Mark is soul deep and the grip the Blade has on him does demonize him when it takes hold. But if he were simply a demon, I think he wouldn't feel so bad that he needs to be always drunk off his ass, and he wouldn't be so mean, and so violent.
I think waitress is on the right track... a hint of the good man is still there... but completely taken down by despair. If there is any more rock bottom than this, I'm afraid to picture it. To think that Dean is not even "trying" to find Sammy -- but instead is actively running from him -- is awful.
But at least the guy who took Sam (idk his name yet) does not appear to be a cold-blooded murderer, so Sam has a chance. He went down like a punk. We attribute that to the fact that Sam is right handed. :P
And.... in Angel news, Cas is dying and Hannah needs his help. I liked Daniel a lot... Hannah seems like a bit of an idiot, and Cas should be a louder voice for free will. I hold it against him for killing Daniel. He should have stopped Hannah instead. Now Daniel's furious friend Adina is on the loose and gunning even harder for Cas and Hannah. ):
In short a very painful ep for me as a Deangrrl to watch. There are some very faint glimmerings of hope for Dean -- but they mostly consist in that he is not demon enough to avoid the guilt, shame, and despair that he still feels because he is still human, but cursed to be the hand behind the blade, cursed to kill and to love it.
Echoes of Elric, Prince of Melnibone, and his cursed black rune sword, which is actually a demon in its own right. The weak, despairing prince, who only derives life, strength and virility from the souls his sword drinks. If you like graphic novels at all, seek out P Craig Russell's graphic novel work on Elric. You might know PCR from his excellent work on The Sandman -- his illustrations of Elric are also that awesome.
and echoes of King Swamp as always:

Now I need some place to run

Date: 2014-10-08 05:17 pm (UTC)For me the end of S9 was not the shock it was to so many. Dean already became a demon once, on Alistair's rack, and he was surprised when he looked into his own eyes and they weren't black.
Then too, when he went to Purgatory, he embraced his existence there, and I feel like it set him up to accept the First Blade. The tragic situation Dean is in right now was already clearly apparent in Magnus's lair when he could barely put the Blade down.
So I am not sure what it will take to bring Dean back. They need to get the Mark off his soul (I'm sure it's deeper than just the skin of his arm) and take the Blade from him (preferably destroy it -- and that probably needs to happen first).
And then Dean needs a heck of a lot of therapy until he can convince himself that he's not just Daddy's Blunt Little Instrument. ):

Date: 2014-10-08 04:08 pm (UTC)Excellent thought!
And yeah, Cas should have kept Hannah under better control...except he seems to be operating under the idea that he is the last angel to take any kind of authoritative position with other angels...
All we can do is sit back and wait for what we get next, I guess...
