SUPERNATURAL VS. CHRISTIANITY
Apr. 7th, 2009 09:30 pmHi! I’m not trying to set up an oppositional dialogue, I just needed a short and catchy title for a chunky essay.
What I’m trying to talk about here is how Supernatural uses the lore of Christianity, without actually engaging with many of the most central tenets of Christian belief. In my humble opinion, Kripke has developed an independent, fictional mythology that uses language and concepts familiar to folks because of our “Christian” ethnic background as Americans – but not using them as a religious person would, but instead as a storyteller – much like the Easter Bunny and the Christmas Tree are part of American mythology, much different from the meanings those symbols hold for religious Pagans.
This is important because many folks hear the religious terminology, which has run rampant during season four, and seem to think of it as Christian, which it really isn’t. It’s religious language being used by Kripke to tell his story of two heroic brothers, their battle of good and evil, and the personae who populate their world.
Here are some of the things I’d like to touch on:
1. “christo?”
2. How to break a deal with a demon
3. Whether someone contaminated by demon blood is Doomed( more... ) My husband, the Pagan Witchalok, first read over and beta’d this for me (this is the kind of thing we talk about ALL THE TIME), and then used his Witchalok Power of Slow, Dramatic Clapping.
Redemption and End of S.4
Apr. 6th, 2009 01:34 pmNO SPOIL I.
This contains Speculation only, and reviews of the situation through 4.18, in response to
lemmings_ post over at spn_heavymeta.
I'm always about Redemption. So in my fantasy, Dean will have to make a choice being spilling blood and having mercy, and by having mercy, he will win.
( (but it probably won't feel that way to him). )

[only slightly spoilery for 4.18]
My Shrödinger's First Time theory(tm) goes like this:
GIVEN: Samndean's First Time is always going to be the perfect ep coda.
GIVEN: It's never going to take place on screen, but always right afterward, as the perfect ep coda.

rambly comment meta
Mar. 29th, 2009 08:08 pmMY RESPONSE TO 4.17,
WITH LINGERING RESPONSES TO 4.16,
AND EVEN 4.15!
AND THE BRILLIANCE OF SAM IN S4 IN GENERAL.
This is a lot of different trains of thought, drawn from my comments to lots of folks' awesome meta posts -- so sorry if it's a bit of a ramble! I'm trying to talk about Sam and his motivations in recent episodes, and how much I love him in s4.
As a starryeyed deangrrl, s4 has convinced me wholeheartedly to love Sam.
His arc this season follows perfectly from the Sammy we first came to know and love in Mystery Spot -- this really is the hunter Sam becomes. Remember Jus in Bello, how Sam watched and protected Dean, after he finally understood how breakable his invincible big brother could be.
S4 brings all that into play, and more. What's at stake in this season is the Hunter Sam will become, and whether Dean will ever see himself as a Hero again.

REVIEW/ META ON SPN 4.16
Mar. 21st, 2009 05:27 pm( Read more... )
Y’all --- S4 is SO surpassing my expectations. For all of you who enjoyed Watchmen, just let me shove you a little ways to the left. Before Watchmen, before V for Vendetta, and almost twenty years before League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Alan Moore was working on a comic book called Saga of the Swamp Thing. It was, for one thing, THE comic that toppled the Comics Code Authority, and paved the way for the founding of Vertigo and Neil Gaiman's Sandman. Moore has his hero (who happens to be a SHAMBLING, MOSS-ENCRUSTED, MOCKERY OF A MAN) fight all kinds of terrifying demons, and eventually, he goes to Hell to retrieve the soul of his unjustly taken wife. Oh, the EPIC!!!!! John Constantine made his first appearance in those pages, so take Note! I have been waiting MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS for that storyline to see its equal, and THAT DAY HAS ARRIVED MY FRIENDS.
ROOT ROOT ROOT! SUPERNATURAL SEASON FOUR!

dollhouse, brief reaction to ep 3
Mar. 7th, 2009 11:33 amBelow the cut, you will find mention of one particular moment in ep 3, that heard me scream an "AWESOME!" and then I rant about popular music lyrics which I find gratingly misogynistic.

SPN OFFICIAL COMPANION FOR SEASON 3
Mar. 4th, 2009 01:19 pmA less than literary review of Supernatural Companion s3!
( cut if you don't want to know what's in there )
If you have read the other season companions, are they really good too? I assume so.
But if you are short on cash, and don't care for them, I'm looking to pick up s1 and s2, or the magazines, so contact me at fannishliss at gmail dot com if you want to sell!

second Dollhouse ep review
Feb. 21st, 2009 11:01 pmmusings---This is all speculation! Furthermore I do not read spoilers! and, I'm just going by what I saw, not by any extraneous material on the web or whatever.
also, sadly, I missed the first ten minutes of the most recent ep, but if I missed something very key, please let me know.
so, when we tuned in Echo
DOLLHOUSE REVIEW, SPOILERS
Feb. 19th, 2009 01:09 pmSo we wanted to watch Dollhouse. We are not intense Whedon fans, but will certainly make an effort to watch his shows. I was a big fan of Firefly, a moderate fan of Buffy (more at the beginning) and Angel (more in the middle). We also liked his XMen and I liked Dr. Horrible fairly well! Anyway, just to get that out of the way, Whedon is not my God, but I have given all his work my attention.
He talked about his project re Dollhouse on Fresh Air if you want to go listen to him talk for an hour.
http://www.npr.org/templates/rundowns/rundown.php?prgId=13&prgDate=02-12-2009 i think.
He did run it past friends of his at Equality Now because he knew the idea was going to raise a lot of eyebrows.... not that he went out for a feminist vetting but they were feminists and they said, yeah, try for it.
So, here is my humble opinion and take on the show's first episode.

supernatural books cheap!
Jan. 14th, 2009 09:53 amI just went over to look at dvds at amazon as per poisontaster's tip that there was a sale on.... I didn't find any dvds that I wanted, but I did preorder a fun group of spn books!
John Winchester's Journal, by Alex Irvine
Supernatural companion vol 3
and the Smart Pop book of essays on spn
It was only $35 for the whole batch, and free shipping! They will arrive in March, when I least expect it.
( blabber )
Apparently Young Severus cannot help but read someone else's journal, no matter that it is a grim, 50 year old, American muggle who has no patience for foolish wand waving OR potions, but prefers wicked long machetes and antique pistols.

Happy New Year! Roundup!
Jan. 4th, 2009 12:40 pmWell, apparently I joined Livejournal and made my first post in November of 2007.
So it'll be fun to look back and see what I've come up with in just over a year!
Nov. 17, 2007: my meta on my favorite Metallica songs and what Dean Winchester thinks of them.
Dec 14, 2007: my grouchy response when Dean couldn't sing Silent Night.
Jan 9, 2008: short meta on Dean and Giftedness
Jan 10, 2008: my first posted fic!! a drabble: Sam prays
(actually, it's a poem, but it is 100 words exactly)
Jan 18: ficlet (1300 words): "Taking Care of Sammy"
Dean's pov during s3. Brotherly love.
feb 11: my seven things meme that is actually seven interesting things about me
feb 13: another Metallica meta
feb 13: my scholarly meta on Wincest and Romanticism (so this is why I got a phd!)
feb 25: my meta on Misogyny (and this is what comes of my women's studies certificate!)
march 4: the fanfic my seven year old wrote!
mar 18: crack!poetry: Thirteen Ways of Looking at Sam and Dean (with apologies to Wallace Stevens)
mar 19: my soundtrack of the year: Impala Rocks on!
I don't post songs on the internet, but any flisters who have requests for classic rock, email me at fannishliss at gmail dot com, and I will mail you a Cd with your choice of songs.
mar 24: an actual 7500 word FIC, "Who do you say that I am?"
Sammy is the demon messiah in this story -- alternate ending to s3
June 3: meta on Motherhood and Misogyny in "The Kids are All Right"
Hey, this meta kind of hangs together! I like it! I CAN haz mai wmst cert!
July 2: 4135 word FIC: "At Usher's Well" -- post s3 hiatus story. Cursed objects can be your friend!

another post s3 hiatus story. This time Sam unlocks his power in a dream.

Nov 10: my ginormous meta on Angels in Hebrew and Christian scripture
Nov 18: ficlet : "Incestuous" -- a Ruby Character Study.
nov 25: another fun ficlet by my 8 yr old
nov 29: my nightmare with bonus hellstorm
dec 18: my semi-bang, Dancers at the Lake, 12000 words!
I am pretty happy with this, if only people would read it!
It is highly theological in nature, and features Dean and Ruby.
It also has a Great Soundtrack! Again, feel free to request the cd.
Originally conceived as a rewrite of the fairy tale, "The Twelve Dancing Princesses," which is one of my favorites.
SO THAT IS MY 2008 IN REVIEW. A dozen cool metas on a variety of topics, plus NINE stories ranging from Drabble #1 to my 12000 words. I'm pretty happy with this!
Thanks SO VERY MUCH to betas and to everyone who took the time to comment --
